“PUPILS 52 boys and girls, aged 4-11 A teeny-tiny school with just over 50 pupils in three classes – but golly, it’s a good one. A mother emails: ‘When I looked around Llangrove, the children were coming in from break and one handed me a flower on her way past, which was pretty compelling.’ Llangrove is a largeish village (one pub, one school), 15 minutes north of Monmouth in a glorious valley. Deputy head Sarah Dean is, says a mother, ‘lovely and very down to earth’, and there are two ‘fantastic’ male teachers. There’s great focus on good manners (pupil behaviour was rated Outstanding by Ofsted), and strong links with the church and the local community. We’re impressed with the IT provision – lots of laptops, iPads and interactive whiteboards in each classroom. Pupils praise the after-school sports clubs, swimming lessons in Monmouth in the summer, theatre trips to Hereford and an annual whole-school expedition – one year they went to Barry Island, which must have been a whole lot of fun.”

P.E. and Sport

At Llangrove we offer a dynamic, varied and stimulating program of activity to ensure that children progress physically through an inspirational and unique PE curriculum. We encourage all children to develop their understanding of the way in which they can use equipment and apparatus safely yet imaginatively to achieve their personal goals. All children have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and increase their self-esteem.

All children are taught by our HMFA PE specialist teacher Mr Goodchild, using the large outside space or school hall.

Opportunities for the children to enjoy the competitive element of PE are provided throughout the year including at the HMFA: netball, gymnastics, quick sticks hockey, football, tag rugby, cricket, rounders, multi skills and athletics inter-school tournaments.

Children in Oak Class develop their dance skills during the Spring term and take part in the Moving Targets dance performance at the Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. Oak Class children also develop their leadership skills by organising regular inter-house sports competitions including: quick sticks hockey, netball, football and tennis.  The inter-house competitions conclude in the summer with our annual sports day.

Swimming lessons for all children in both KS1 and KS2 take place in the summer term at Monmouth Sports Complex. The children not only learn essential swimming skills during these sessions but learn to become more independent and develop necessary personal skills and lifesaving techniques. Children also have the opportunity to further these skills at after school sports clubs.
