Clearwell Caves visit

Beech class spent Wednesday  14th October exploring a cool Clearwell Caves (it’s a constant 10oC
underground) and the nearby Iron Age village at the Secret Forest. We discovered that the caves have been mined for ochre and iron ore for over 4,000 years and saw 4,000 year old hammers and tools that would have been used. We also found outwhat life would have been like for children who worked in the mines (for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week) including holding 8kg of iron ore – which the
children would have carried in billys on their back.
“I liked it when Jonathan (the tour guide) switched the lights off – I couldn’t see my hands in front of my face – it was really spooky!.”
“We liked crawling through the tunnel.”
“I enjoyed hearing the facts from Jonathan.”
“I liked going into the Iron Age house and sitting on the big wooden chair.”
