Eco Shool

Eco-Schools is an environmental education programme and is managed in England by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the anti-litter campaign for England.

Eco-Schools England has the most Eco-Schools in the world, with 70% of all schools in England currently registered with the programme (that’s just shy of 17,000 schools).

The Eco-Schools International Programme was developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) as a response to some of the needs identified at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development. The Programme’s official start was in 1994, with support of Denmark, Germany, Greece and United Kingdom.

We encourage the children to respect and care for the world around them. With this in mind we promote care of the school and school grounds. The children tend a vegetable garden, they feed the birds and look after the pond and wildlife area.

We have energy representatives who help the teachers to remember to turn off lights and projectors and to shut the classroom door. We also take part in ‘switch-Off’ fortnight in November.  In the past pupils have led assemblies promoting aspects of eco-schools or organised events.  We regularly recycle paper and card using the green Herefordshire Council bins as well as recycling batteries, ink cartridges and pens/biros.  We enjoy activities such as gardening and litter collections in the school grounds and further afield.

Eco-Schools is now run in 53 countries around the world, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France and from Morocco to South Africa. Eco-Schools is administered in Scotland by Keep Scotland Beautiful; in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy; and in Northern Ireland by Tidy Northern Ireland.

The Eco-Schools programme is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by FEE. In addition to Eco-Schools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests.
